ARE YOU
PREPARED FOR THE BIG READ?
THE YEAR
2010 IS DESIGNATED TO FEATURE
MARK TWAIN’S FIRST AND MOST FAMOUS NOVEL ABOUT AN ADVENTUROUS YOUNG MAN
FROM
HANNIBAL, MISSOURI—TOM SAWYER.
About the
time Twain was conjuring up
his tale of memorable characters including Tom, Huck, Aunt Polly, Becky
Thatcher, Injun Joe and Muff Potter, other young men were struggling
for
survival in the War Between the States east of the Mississippi River.
Joe is an
example of a young slave whose
life near the infamous Confederate war prison at Andersonville, Georgia
is just
as exciting and adventurous as Tom Sawyer’s.
Nicknamed “Goober” by prison guards, Joe befriends an
escaped Union
prisoner who teaches him ways to deal with the many challenges of
growing up as
the Civil War rages around him.
Author Bob
Whetstone is available to
present a program during your celebration of the B I G
R E A D that illustrates the parallels
between the adventures of the young heroes featured in these two novels:
